Letitia Plummer has won the race for Harris County judge, defeating Orlando Sanchez.
Plummer declared herself as the winner as Sanchez made his concession speech.
Plummer has made history as the first Black woman county judge for Harris County.
Plummer, a former Houston City Council member, faced Sanchez, a former Harris County treasurer and Houston city controller.
The candidates campaigned on issues affecting county residents, including property taxes, public safety, infrastructure and government spending.
Despite the title, the county judge does not preside over a courtroom. The position leads Harris County Commissioners Court, which oversees the county budget and decisions involving roads, flood control, public health and other county services.
The election comes as Harris County continues to address questions surrounding flood mitigation, public safety spending and the county’s financial priorities.
